Garlic Galore

I came across this restaurant while on holiday in Helsinki. Well I suppose it wasn’t an accident. During my outbound Finnair flight I got chatting to another passenger who is from the city and he recommended Restaurant Kynsilaukka to me. I remember him saying that perhaps it isn’t the best place to go if you want to smell minty fresh on a date as this restaurant specialises in dishes with garlic. I like food with garlic and so I decided to try and find it for myself.

Restaurant Kynsilaukka (Kynsilaukka means garlic in English) was founded in 1987 and since then it has become one of the most popular in Helsinki. I highly recommend this restaurant, not only because the food is very good, but also because it is open every day of the year, even on Christmas Eve, a time of the year when almost everything else is closed. Don’t expect a fancy restaurant as this one is very down to earth and this is reflected in the prices – it isn’t overly expensive, but it is all about quality here….and garlic of course.

There are lots of traditional dishes on the menu. At the start of the article I said that I like garlic and I do. However, even I thought the marinated garlic cloves were a bit much. In saying that I was pleasantly surprised at how good the garlic ice cream is. My friend who came with me tried the garlic beer and was also impressed. You will even be offered a shot of garlic to finish your meal. Just try everything and be adventurous. Remember that if you are on holidays in Helsinki and fancy something different, or are searching for somewhere to eat over the winter holidays, try Restaurant Kynsilaukka.
